
The European Pet Food Association (FEDIAF) has released its latest data on pet ownership in Europe, titled “FACTS & FIGURE 2025,” and provides a statistical analysis and review of the European #petmarket.
We have compiled several key points from the official FEDIAF report and compared the data with last year’s report.
Notably, the Russian pet market was not included in this FEDIAF report.

The number of live pets has increased by nearly 3 million.
The penetration rate of pet-owning households is approaching 50%.
The European #PetFood Industry Federation released the latest data showing that the number of pets in Europe has reached 299 million (excluding Russia), an increase of nearly 3 million compared to last year (296 million).

Among them, there are 108 million #petcats, 90 million #petdogs, and 52 million ornamental birds. Other representative pets include 25 million rabbits, 18 million fish, and 11 million turtles.
In Europe, there are approximately 139 million pet-owning households, representing a pet ownership penetration rate of nearly 50%. Of these, 25% own at least one dog, and 26% own at least one cat. The European pet food market is estimated to be worth over €29.3 billion, representing a year-on-year increase of approximately 9%. Currently, there are over 400 pet food companies in Europe, with an estimated number of factories exceeding 500.
By country, the three countries with the highest pet ownership penetration rates are Hungary, Poland, and Romania, each with a penetration rate close to 50%. Romania, Poland, and Hungary also have the highest rates of household cat ownership.

Dog food accounts for 58%
Wet cat food accounts for 60% of the cat food market
Data shows that in the European pet food market, dog food accounts for 58% and cat food accounts for 35%. In terms of production value, dog food accounts for 47% of the market, while cat food accounts for 39%.
Among dog food, wet food accounts for 30%, dry food accounts for 61%, and treats account for 9%. Among cat food, wet food accounts for 60%, dry food accounts for 36%, and cat food accounts for 4%.

The report also cites product sales by market share. It reports that dog food sales account for 47% of pet food sales, while cat food accounts for 39%.
Among dog food sales, wet food accounts for 26%, dry food accounts for 61%, and treats account for 24%. Among cat food sales, wet food accounts for 60%, dry food accounts for 30%, and treats account for 10%.

Europe’s cat population exceeds 100 million
An increase of 2.26 million
Data shows that the current pet cat population in Europe stands at 108 million, an increase of 2.26 million. The EU’s pet cat population stands at 80.965 million, an increase of 1.879 million.
Looking at the pet cat population by country, Germany has the largest cat population (15.7 million), an increase of 500,000 cats since the previous count. France has 14.9 million pet cats; the UK has 11.4 million cats, a decrease of 500,000; and Italy has 10.24 million cats, an increase of 10,000.

Europe’s Dog Population Nears 90 Million
An Increase of Nearly 900,000
The report shows that the number of pet dogs in Europe stands at 89.615 million, an increase of nearly 900,000 since the previous count. Within the EU, the number stands at 69.359 million, an increase of 739,000.
Looking at the number of pet dogs per country, the UK has the largest number of pet dogs, with 11.7 million, a decrease of 1 million since the previous count. Germany has 10.5 million pet dogs, a decrease of 100,000; Spain has 9.463 million pet dogs, an increase of 153,000; and Italy has 8.766 million pet dogs, an increase of 11,000.

The number of birds in Europe is 48.16 million.
Over 17 million aquatic pets are kept.
Birds, second only to dogs and cats in number of pets in Europe, have a live population of 48.16 million, a decrease of 290,000. The number of aquatic pets is 17.638 million, a decrease of 1.247 million since the previous count.
The European country with the largest number of live birds is Italy (12.883 million), followed by Turkey (11.84 million), France (5.8 million), and Spain (5.082 million).

The European country with the largest number of live aquatic animals is the United Kingdom (7.3 million), followed by Germany (2.2 million), Italy (1.503 million) and France (1.252 million).
