AKC Unveils 2025’s Most Popular Dog Names – See the Top Picks for Boys & Girls

As the world’s largest registry for purebred and mixed-breed dogs, plus a leading advocate for canine welfare and responsible ownership, the AKC’s annual name list is always a fun snapshot of pet naming trends.

“Picking a name for your dog is such a joyful, meaningful part of welcoming them into your home,” said Gina M. DiNardo, AKC President and CEO. “People put real thought into finding something that fits their pet’s personality perfectly— it’s a decision that feels both personal and special.”

Based on AKC registration data and AKC Canine Partners enrollments, here’s how the top names shook out this year:

For girl dogs, Luna stays firmly planted at the number one spot—proving her enduring popularity! The top four remained consistent with 2024: Bella (2nd), Daisy (3rd), and Lucy (4th) all held their ground. The big surprise? Ruby jumped an impressive 11 spots from 16th place last year to land at 5th. Uma rounds out the top 10 for girls.

Over on the boy dog side, there’s more movement: Max is back on top! After being dethroned by Milo last year, Max reclaims the number one spot. Hank steals the show with a massive leap—from 35th in 2024 to 2nd place this year. Teddy keeps his 3rd place, Cooper climbs one spot to 4th, and Gus rounds out the top five. Milo, meanwhile, falls to 12th place. Zen closes out the top 10 for boys.
